He put a ring on it đź’Ť
4 minute read
One time, I was flying back home from LA to Austin. Window-seat economy is my wallet’s preferred seat of choice, but that day luck was on my side and I was upgraded to first class.
I was seated next to a Professor who researches medical devices, biosensors, and the like. Given his expertise, he is also sought after as an expert witness on high profile patent lawsuits (think Apple). His research at the time was centered around the Oura ring. For those who don’t know what an Oura ring is, it’s a device that tracks a user's heart rate, blood oxygen, breathing regularity, heart rate variability, temperature, activity, and sleep.
Three hours flew by - pun intended - as we talked about all his accomplishments. When we landed, he offered me a ride home since he lived in the same area - well at least that’s what he said. I figured if he can afford a first class seat and he looks legit on LinkedIN, then he must not be a serial killer. Note: I’m still alive so it was not a bad judgement call if I may say so myself…although I’ve also gotten in a stranger’s car in Rome but that’s a story for another post.
We exchanged numbers and he began texting me the next few days. He kept wanting to go on a date but I just wasn’t interested and I kept saying no. That’s when he sweetened the deal and made a proposal that was pretty enticing. He wanted to meet to give me - wait for it - an Oura ring. I did what I’m sure 99% of you would do, I said ok.
I went on a date with him. It was a good time. To be fair, I always have a good time. That’s because I always bring my charming personality.
The date was nothing to write a whole post about. Nothing groundbreaking. But here’s the kicker: he actually put an Oura ring on it.
While that was the first and last date with the Professor, the Oura ring has since lasted.
The Oura ring has helped me become more intentional about how I live each day, starting with better sleep. The ring tracks my sleep scores, and I’ve learned that quality rest directly impacts my mood, energy, and focus. When my deep sleep is low? I feel it. Some mornings, I wake up after seven hours, check my app, and if my deep sleep is under an hour, I slap on an eye mask and go back to bed. Priorities.
Here are my results the past few days.

As you can see, some nights are better than others. And trust me, I feel the difference when I don’t get enough rest.
Sleep, my friends, is the most underrated power move. It’s the gift you give yourself to show up as your best self. If there’s one piece of advice I can impart: Make sleep a priority.
There are other ways to track the quality of your sleep. I know people who swear by Elon Musk’s favorite smart bed, Eight Sleep Pod. It costs a whopping $5,000! Once I have more research on it I’ll let you know. If you have any hacks on getting a good night’s sleep, please feel free to comment below.
In the meantime, I’ll be trying to get a lot of sleep and holding off on dates (until after I finish hosting the TIDE SPARK event).
However, if you have the latest version of the Oura ring and can fly both me and you in first class then I can make an exception.
